The text is nicely laid out, with a time line, photos, engravings, maps, and sidebars that focus on specific incidents of interest--from passenger service to surveying problems. Streissguth does not whitewash history; his discussion of Chinese immigrant laborers mentions anti-Asian sentiment and some of the resulting violence against the Chinese. The occasionally dry text is animated by judicious use of other sources, including firsthand accounts of the action, and the bibliographies are varied, listing scholarly books on railroad history as well as picture books on trains.
