PreSchool-Grade 2-Slightly precious, corny illustrations accompany this humorous farm story from Switzerland. Discouraged when he tries to train his new wife's two dogs, Flip and Woolly, Carl buys a Golden Retriever puppy, claiming it will be "'obedient, devoted, and easy to train.'" The older canines sense a threat to their lazy existence and proceed to undermine Prince's education, converting him to their point of view: "'No self-respecting dog should let himself be pushed around by a human.'" They do their job so well that Carl is ready to get rid of Prince- until an act of heroism wins him a real place in the family and the undying admiration of Flip and Woolly. Although a little cluttered, the illustrations are endearing, and there's lots to look at and absorb in this peek at a European farm.
