Review:
What is the best way to gently wean a baby? Should you be weaning your baby now? The Nursing Mother's Guide to Weaning, by Kathleen Huggins and Linda Ziedrich, is at times less a how-to and more a "why-not-to" book about nursing your infant, baby, and toddler. As such, it provides strong, supportive arguments for not weaning babies too early. Each of the possible impediments to nursing--physical reasons, logistical problems such as working, and emotional considerations such as critical family members--are discussed and dealt with sympathetically, reasonably, and with useful tips.

For those who have decided to wean their babies, Huggins and Ziedrich give clear hints on how to use shortened nursing, postponement, substitution, and distraction to make weaning a positive experience for both mother and child. The Nursing Mother's Guide to Weaning is a useful accompaniment to Huggin's terrific, bestselling guide The Nursing Mother's Companion.

From the Back Cover:
How to wean; when to wean, and when not to; babies, toddlers, and older children; ensuring good nutrition; weaning to a bottle vs. a cup; mother-led vs. child-led weaning; gradual vs. abrupt weaning; tips for the working mother; and much more.

Over our 25 years of experience in dealing with children and families, the healthiest children we have seen are those who are not weaned before their time. Kathleen Huggins and Linda Ziedrich make this point and many more beautifully throughout this book. -William Sears, M.D., and Martha Sears, R.N., authors of The Birth Book and The Baby Book

Always considerate of the needs of babies and mothers, The Nursing Mothers Guide to Weaning offers practical and truly helpful advice on this significant life transition. -Penny Simkin, author of The Birth Partner and co-author of Pregnancy, Childbirth, and the Newborn

With the sensible, gentle advice and solid information provided by Kathleen Huggins and Linda Ziedrich, mothers can wean their children with as much love as they nursed them. This is a truly supportive book. -Karen Pryor and Gale Pryor, authors of Nursing Your Baby
