Gilbert Morris spent ten years as a pastor before becoming Professor of English at Ouachita Baptist University in Arkansas and earning a Ph.D. at the University of Arkansas. During the summers of 1984 and 1985, he did postgraduate work at the University of London. A prolific writer, he has had over 25 scholarly articles and 200 poems published in various periodicals, and over the past years has had more than 180 novels published, including THE HOUSE OF WINLSOW series, LIONS OF JUDAH series and CHENEY DUVALL, M.D. His family includes three grown children, and he and his wife live in Alabama.

YA?Morris effectively portrays the struggles to survive both physically and emotionally in Charleston, SC, during Reconstruction. Cheney Duvall, a Yankee woman doctor, visits the city, where goods are expensive and scarce and the war has not changed individual attitudes toward former slaves. Her new friends are from both races and include former Confederate General Nathan Bedford Forrest. Conflicts develop and the physician sees firsthand the impact of a group similar to the KKK. Leading characters are well developed in this complex plot: there are many story lines to be resolved at the end. Cheney is a feisty female who does not follow any of the typical southern behavior or standard occupation for a lady.
