About the Author:

Nathaniel Bartlett Sylvester was born in the hamlet of Denmark in Lewis County ans studied law in Lowville. He was admitted to the bar at Oswego in 1852. In 1846 he founded the Lewis County Democrat, a newspaper published at Lowville until 1916. In 1866 he was appointed judge of the U.S. Circuit Court and moved to Troy. It was here that he wrote and published his respected histories of Saratoga, Ulster and Rensselaer Counties. He died in 1894.
