Grade 6-9 --This entry in an established series covers the life of slave revolt leader Vesey. Because he was an epileptic, Vesey could not be sold, so he went to work for a slave-ship captain. Eventually, using funds derived from contract laboring and a lottery win, he purchased his freedom for $600. He worked as a carpenter, a position that enabled him to travel the countryside and see the living conditions of other blacks. So deeply was he affected by his travels that he considered emigrating to Africa, but decided to stay and fight for change instead. The course of action he chose was a bloody rebellion, but the plot was uncovered and he was hanged. A good introduction to the antislavery movement, this tells the story of one of the early slave heroes.
