As a boy, Richard Locke traveled with his family to the New World to escape the tyranny of the gentry in England. Settling in Virginia, he helped his father develop a thriving farm which they hacked from the wilderness. However, as pioneers continued to move outward into the lands of the Indians, Richard felt himself called by the opportunities and adventure to be had in those still untamed regions. Richard begins his journey by joining a work crew assigned to rebuild the Braddock Road to Fort Pitt. Along the way, he meets Flip Wade, a young trapper Richard learns to admire and respect. Together the decide to make their fortune in the lucrative fur trade at the frontier outpost of Detroit. Life in the wild is not easy, though, and contains the perils of dealing with the strange customs and occasional savagery of the Indians. During the course of their travels, they save the life of Naseeka, a young brave destined to become the chief of a Wyandotte village. A bond is formed between the two young explorers and this noble Indian warrior who eagerly wants to learn the ways of the white man. Theirs is a friendship strong enough to span the gap between two different cultures, but that relationship becomes threatened as the Indians begin retaliating against the continued encroachment of the English settlers. Caught in the vortex of Chief Pontiac's bloody uprising, Richard and Flip find their lives are at stake, and perhaps their only hope for survival lies in the hands of The Wyandotte.
