Gr 4-6-From a simple gift box to a fancy castle, this book encourages readers to use cookie dough to make a variety of constructions, large and small. Every project is formed from one of five recipes: oatmeal chocolate-chip, gingerbread, sugar, shortbread, or cinnamon applesauce dough (which is inedible but aromatic). Icing and melted chocolate are used as glue. Eleven cookie creations (e.g., flower wreath, candleholder, Thanksgiving turkey) reflect seasons, holidays, and other occasions. Variations are suggested, and youngsters are invited to invent even more possibilities. Each project is described on a double-page spread and has clear, full-color illustrations and step-by-step directions. The finished items are shown in photographs. One of the hazards of this type of construction is the fragility of the pieces. Although the author provides a section on repairing cookies, she does not encourage youngsters to make a project several times, which might be necessary since it takes practice and patience to learn this craft.-Carolyn Jenks, First Parish Unitarian Church, Portland, ME
