From School Library Journal:

Gr 4-6-Jake, 11, and his family have recently moved to a rural Canadian ranch. The boy has made one good friend in Willy, a spirited, energetic girl. Unfortunately, this interesting character plays only a minor role after the first chapter. Jake befriends a pregnant coyote, and Shadow soon becomes a part of the family. When Griff Webster, an unfriendly neighbor, hears that the new family is caring for a coyote, the concerned cattleman begins to make threats. But Webster is not a satisfying villain; readers are given explanations for his bad attitude in the hope that they will accept his rapid and unrealistic turnaround in the final pages. None of the characters ever comes to life. Minor figures are introduced and not mentioned again. Jake's parents, while important to the story, never develop personalities, and even Shadow mysteriously appears, disappears, becomes ill and then well, is friendly to her new family and then rebuffs them. Occasional glimpses of anthropomorphic behavior do little to add depth or insight into the animal. Only Ten, the runt of Shadow's litter and the coyote that truly becomes a pet, develops a real personality, offering a reward to animal-loving readers who stick with this slow story. This brief and simplistic novel is illustrated with a few old-fashioned pen-and-ink illustrations.-Susan Oliver, Tampa-Hillsborough Public Library System, FL
