Did you know that a sailfish's tail helps it zoom through water faster than most cars on a highway? Or that cows and horses swish their tails to flick away pesky bugs? Tails can really be terrific--animals use them to swim, fly, attract a mate, and even communicate! In this tale of tails, five to seven year olds will find out how creatures ranging from salmon to turkeys depend on their tales for survival, and how we humans once had them too. Every kid will love the full-color photos of animals in all sizes and shapes. The author lives in Victoria, British Columbia. 32 pages (all in color), 8 x 10. NEW IN PAPERBACK

From Kirkus Reviews:
Although most children think of a tail as something to wag, Swanson makes clear that a tail can be extremely useful in helping animals balance, for communicating with other animals, and for providing protection. Finding their tails under examination are a wide range of creatures, including bats, lemurs, and crocodiles, as well as the more exotic scale-covered mammal called a pangolin, whose tail can grip branches as well as grasp its babies. Other creatures, such as rattlesnakes and skunks, use their tails as a red flag of warning. Full-color photographs show both the creature and its tail in use, making it easier to understand how a kangaroo's huge tail can actually help, not hinder, its jump; even a lizard's break-away tails are covered, including one lucky lizard who lost one tail and grew seven in its place. Perfect for amusement or for edification. (index) (Picture book/nonfiction. 6-10) -- Copyright ©2000, Kirkus Associates, LP. All rights reserved.
