Although most children think of a tail as something to wag, Swanson makes clear that a tail can be extremely useful in helping animals balance, for communicating with other animals, and for providing protection. Finding their tails under examination are a wide range of creatures, including bats, lemurs, and crocodiles, as well as the more exotic scale-covered mammal called a pangolin, whose tail can grip branches as well as grasp its babies.
