Tom and Jenny, each the hero of their own adventure - Kalifax and Captain Jenny and the Sea of Wonders - join forces on a Tolkienian-like journey to a strange new land full of wonderous sights and astounding dangers.

Tom and Jenny seek the fate of the elves who fled west many years earlier. They take with them the crew from both previous voyages as well - the Captain, the First Mate, Cookie, the two sailors with blue hoods.

Once again, they experience many natural wonders and encounter striking peoples - some welcoming and eager to help, others who are less than thrilled with the newcomers. Their quest for the fate of the elves bears fruit, although not in the manner they might have hoped. Tom's Starglass, acquired on his Kalifax journey, provides an important link to the past they are attempting to discover. Their journey culminates in a fight for their lives against a mysterious and bloodcurdling foe, a fight they won't all survive.

With his powerful sense of mythic structure, and his trademark use of language both challenging and delightful, Duncan Thornton has added a third tale to his lasting contribution to the world of Canadian fantasy literature.

From School Library Journal:
Grade 5-8-In this sequel to Kalifax (2000) and CaptainJenny and the Sea of Wonders (2002, both Coteau), Tom and Jenny are off on another adventure. This time, the darkness of the Long Night is forcing them to search out a new homeland in the Vastlands, to the West. Tom, Jenny, their friend Gimlet, and the crew from their previous journeys set sail hoping to find the reason for the disappearance of the Elves who vanished years before when they, too, journeyed to the West looking for a new place to settle. Tom's Star-Glass will guide them, but may also attract dangerous foes who want to keep them out of the Vastlands. Readers need not have read the previous two novels to understand this one, but it would help. However, the writing is awkward and the characters are never fully developed. Buy this only if the first two in the series are popular.-Ginny Collier, Dekalb County Public Library, Chamblee, GA
