"I am sailing away to the end of the day,
down the long winding river that goes to the sea."

Just before it is time to sleep, Nicole settles into bed with all her animals. She becomes the captain of their boat as they prepare to sail away. When her father comes in to say goodnight, he tells Nicole a wonderful sail-away story.

In the story, Nicole travels in her small boat down a winding river. Along the way she encounters a crow, a cow and three kittens. When they ask where she is going and if they can join her expedition, Nicole makes room for the new adventurers. Each animal brings something to improve the boat, adding a sail woven from grass, ropes made of flowers and wind to blow them along. When they reach the sea, the friends are afloat in a beautiful sailboat.

Allen Morgan has created a gentle story of co-operation, imagination and dreams, complemented by Jirina Marton's cheerful illustrations.

From School Library Journal:
PreSchool-Grade 1 Just before it is time to fall asleep, Nicole pretends that her bed is a boat and that she is its captain. Her father then tells her the story of how a little girl (with the same name) sails away with a crow, a cow, and some kittens. Nicole then falls asleep. This sensitive and evocative picture book is a departure in style and content for Morgan, who has previously written such comic slapstick adventures as Daddy-Care (1986) and Matthew and the Midnight Tow Truck (1984, both Annick Pr). Marton's acrylic paintings are reminiscent of the work of Binette Schroeder for Flora's Magic House (North-South, 1986) in their fresh pastoral approach and their naivety. Although similar in theme to Irene Haas' The Maggie B. (Atheneum, 1973), this night journey is less complex and would be more suitable for bedtime reading and for storytimes on the theme of sleepiness because of its straightforward storyline.Lorraine Douglas, Winnipeg Public Library, Manitoba, Canada
