Twenty-five Appalachian female writers from throughout OH, WV and KY – poets, storytellers and musicians – know very well that it is not nearly enough to make loud denials concerning stereotype. "Women Speak," a product of the Women of Appalachia Project, does the best possible thing one can do with an impression: layer it in language, speak it, put it in a frame behind glass, and generally hang it out there so the sun shines all over it. The results are rowdy, mostly brilliant and a little rough around the edges. It is neither apologist nor placating.

About the Author:
If you are from Appalachia, you grow to realize early on, that many people have an image of an Appalachian woman, and they look down on her. The Women of Appalachia Project was created to address discrimination directed at women from the Appalachian region by encouraging participation from women artists of diverse backgrounds, ages and experiences to come together, to embrace the stereotype, to show the whole woman; beyond the superficial factors that people use to judge her. "Women Speak" is a compilation of the work of twenty-five Appalachian women writers – poetry, story and song – participating in the 2016-17 Women of Appalachia Project events. These women know very well that it is not nearly enough to make loud denials concerning stereotype. "Women Speak" does the best possible thing that can be done with an impression: layer it in language, speak it, put it in a frame behind glass, and generally hang it out there so the sun shines all over it.
