Les études réunies en ce volume développent sous différents aspects une seule et même question quelles sont les causes profondes qui amenèrent du XV au X vie siècle un changement radical dans les rapports entre l'art italien et l'art des contrées au nord des Alpes, dont la peinture flamande était à cette époque la manifestation la plus originale Des deux foyers les plus intenses de production artistique, la Flandre et la Toscane, ce fut le premier qui eut le plus grand pouvoir de rayonnement pendant le xve siècle. Son influence se fit sentir dans tous les pays situés au nord des Alpes, au point de donner aux arts de ces différents pays un certain air de parenté, qui les rapproche les uns des autres et les difi'érencie en même temps de l'art italien. Elle s'exerça même en Italie, surtout dans la partie septentrionale, alors que l'influence italienne débordait peine les Alpes.
