From Acknowledgments This book was first published in French and illustrated by Léopold Marboeuf under the title: Frère Jacques Missal. It was published in English in 1962 by Templegate Publishers in Springfield, Illinois. The Frère Jacques Missal is considered a classic in the annuals of children’s Mass books both for the sophistication of its theology and the exceptional art of Léopold Marboeuf (1916-2006). Sacred Story Press would like to thank Templegate Publishers for authorizing a reissue of the Frère Jacques Missal with updated text and some original new art to correspond to the new Mass settings. Sacred Story Press is also grateful to Fr. Trung Pham, S.J., for creating new art to supplement the original Frère Jacques Missal images and the new Mass settings. Fr. Trung also created images for the thirteen new saints we added to this updated edition: Sts. Catherine of Sienna, John XXIII, Kateri Tekakwitha, Junipero Serra, Ignatius of Loyola, Edith Stein, Maximilian Kolbe, Mother Teresa, John Paul II, Dung-Lac and Companions, and Francis Xavier. Fr. Pham’s black and white images beautifully capture the saints they depict and preserve the integrity of the original color images by Marboeuf. Most especially, Sacred Story Press is grateful to Léopold Marboeuf for his exceptionally beautiful art. Léopold drew these images for his grandchildren. The love and faith of a father and grandfather is evident in every image. We would also like to express our sincere gratitude to Anne Franciose Marboeuf and the other children of Léopold Marboeuf for their permission to reproduce in this missal some additional images from Léopold’s book of BIBLE STORIES published in the late 1950’s.

THE ARRANGEMENT OF THIS MISSAL
The more important pictures are placed on the pages which are likely to get the most attention: the right hand pages. They do not necessarily or as a general rule represent the actions of the priest but rather those of Christ which the Mass relives or recalls. For it is essential to have the child realize the presence of Christ in the Mass. Christ will speak through the pictures, uttering the redeeming word, performing the healing gestures, offering himself upon the cross in sacrifice. For the child much more than for the adult the gesture is the truest form of communication.
