The recent trend toward holistic living has heightened our national fascination with herbal remedies and less conventional therapies such as acupuncture, yoga, aromatherapy, and ethnobotany. Now, this intimate and inspiring book opens up the world of herbal medicine to those interested in learning about the history of these techniques and approaches. Women Healers of the World shares with readers an extraordinary variety of healing plants from around the world that have inspired today’s alternative” medicine, as well as the stories, challenges, and triumphs of remarkable women healers from past and present all of whom promote the use of medicinal herbs.

Through this book, herbalist and author Holly Bellebuono aims to educate readers about sixteen plant-based world healing traditions and thirty women who have practiced them. Bellebuono also explores the geography, history, and medical heritage of twenty countries where these traditions originated. With thorough knowledge of the uses and effects of these healing traditions, readers can then move on to featured recipes for herbal remedies they can make in their home kitchens. Following Bellebuono’s instructions, readers will produce remedies such as soothing lip balms, wound pastes, face masks, arthritis oils, relaxing bath salts, and revitalizing teas.

"Women Healers of the World: The Traditions, History, and Geography of Herbal Medicine is a pick for health, fitness, and women's issues collections alike and documents the rise of herbal medicine and remedies as it pertains to women who promote these herbs. It comes from a herbalist who moves far beyond the usual herbal guide to consider the works of female healers from around the world, and it uses these women's words to explore their particular approaches - as in the case of Isla Burgess, a New Zealand healer working with the Maori tribal nations. Add a pictorial approach that packs in full-page color photos into an oversized presentation and you add a travelogue to a wide-ranging herbalist guide that will attract audiences from several genres." Midwest Book Review

"This amazing book at an amazing price for such an oversized, gorgeous layout carries the heart and soul of herbalism. A creative, modern format showcases the lineage of 31 famous herbalists from around the world, beginning with Egypt’s Hatsheput in 1508 BC. En route, the herbalists who are profiled include Hildegard von Binge and Trotula of Salerno of the 12th century. The book also embraces modern herb authors, such as Teiraona Low Dog and Susan Weed. Photos accompany the descriptions of individuals and locations where they live or that is represented by their work. A couple pages in each woman’s profile are devoted to their favorite herbs. Another page delightfully defines a healing word representing that individual. Budding herablists inspired by this work will find a chapter of herbal recipes. My hat goes off to Bellebuono, who directors Vineyard Herb Teas & Apothecary and The Bellebuono School of Herbal Medicine and also wrote The Authentic Healer." The American Herb Association
