This is a true story or, more accurately, a collection of remembrances. All the characters in this narrative are real people, although some of the minor actors in the drama are composites drawn from several individuals, typical of the kind of people who lived in that place and time. It has been designated as a novel because some liberties have been taken with time frames, scale, or sequence of events for the sake of telling a coherent story and not just a series of vignettes. It is hoped that the reader will forgive those small transgressions. I also hope that the reader will find it possible to accept Louise, the protagonist, as she is-imperfect, damaged, troubled-and even try to forgive her actions. I do not claim that she was always well intentioned, but she is human. She has been much put upon. To the best of my knowledge, I have waited until almost all the persons in this story are no longer living before telling it, and all their names have been changed. I thereby hope to spare anyone embarrassment should they think they recognize some of the individuals.

About the Author:
Jim Puskas grew up in southwestern Ontario in the rural setting described in “Eastwind” and was present as a minor player for many of the events that take place in the story. It was a simpler time, when most family farms were much smaller than today, communities were close-knit, and much of what farm families used for their daily living they raised and processed themselves. The writer chose to tell Louise's story in her own voice because her story is such a personal one that it could not be told in any other way. When creating a fictitious character, a writer is free to “get inside the head” of that person and ascribe to her whatever motivations he wishes. But in this case, Louise is a real person, so it's clearly presumptuous of him to have written Louise's story in this manner. This writer, however, got to know Louise very well despite her determination to keep her own counsel and shut everyone out of her inner world. Whether he has succeeded or not will be up to the reader to decide. Jim spent his adult life in the world of industry, far away from that simple small town and farmland setting of his youth. He is now retired, living in a quiet neighborhood in Ottawa, where he and his wife tend a large garden and enjoy the rich cultural life that is offered by that city. Jim is deeply involved in volunteer work primarily aimed at improving the lives of children and young adults. Jim writes poetry for his own pleasure and that of his friends. “Eastwind” is his first novel.
