“A Pain In The Rs – Where Is The Respect, Reward And Recognition I Deserve” is a book about experiencing a lack of respect, reward and recognition by John, a gifted, brain damaged individual who was subjected to years of oppression, emotional abuse and had his natural progress suppressed by bureaucrats in authority who got him labelled inappropriately. John, who like many under-rated victims has experienced a life of extremes with little or no support when he needed it the most; but still managed to succeed in his own self-taught way albeit not via the usual channels and consequently a lot of talent has gone to waste as well as used in defence and destruction against persistent oppression exercised by officials in positions of authority. Having the ability to understand some maths worthy of A-level standard in junior school (1972) without any private tuition or mentoring and using his imagination to come up with new ideas John was seen as an ideal child, but at the time he was already seeing a child psychiatrist as he had many problems being too advanced for his age, especially with some officials in authority trying to restrict his natural progress which John didn’t like and felt imprisoned. This made John very irritable against being restricted and so he wasn’t going to cooperate when he was treated in the wrong for being different, and wasn’t going to let their mental limitations restrict his progress. Less than a year later in 1973 when he started having temporal lobe epilepsy he was put on a cocktail of drugs which affected his behaviour and with all the extra restrictions and pressure he was being put under combined with the trauma and not being listened to but treated as if he was to blame for everything, it got too much for him and he started to use violence and destruction to defend himself as things were becoming unbearable. He ended up being sectioned and admitted into adults’ psychiatric hospital for five months at the age of twelve where he was regularly sedated with Valium and locked up in a cell; and in doing so got abused by cruel nurses. All this happened between 1973 and 1993 while John was living in the Bridgend area of South Wales, which in 2008 became globally known as The Suicide Capital of the UK. During these twenty years of oppression he didn’t receive a single penny in disability benefits for his care needs, and in spite of his intelligence he was treated as subnormal. In 1993 John relocated to Lancashire and went into business, and in 1996 underwent brain surgery and was cured of epilepsy. Although it has taken a long time, John has rebuilt his life and risen above the many that undermined him for so many years. The journey this book takes you along goes in all directions and so you will need to get stuck in to realise where you are going. Just like going north to get onto a motorway to head much further south, the direction at the start is nothing like further along. When you get to the destination you will see it is all for the better; but it didn’t come without a long battle with bureaucratic control freaks.
