Synopsis

Gorillas, together with chimpanzees, are our closest living relatives. This book is the first photographic and descriptive musculoskeletal atlas of a baby for any non-human primate species, being particularly relevant after the remarkable discovery of a 3.3 million-year-old fossilized human child at Dikika, Ethiopia ("Lucy's baby"). The book therefore adopts the same format as our photographic atlases of adult gorillas, chimpanzees, hylobatids and orangutans, which are part of a series of monographs that will set out the comparative and phylogenetic context of the gross anatomy and evolutionary history of the soft tissue morphology of modern humans and their closest relatives. As the previous books of this series, the present atlas includes detailed high-quality photographs of musculoskeletal structures from most anatomical regions of the body as well as textual information about the attachments, innervation, function and weight of the respective muscles. However, it includes additional information and photographs about the internal organs and skin, as well as CT-scans. The book will be of interest to students, teachers and researchers studying primatology, comparative anatomy, functional morphology, zoology, and physical anthropology and to medical students, doctors and researchers who are curious about the origin, evolution, homology and variations of the musculoskeletal structures of modern humans.

About the Author:

Rui Diogo is an Assistant Prof. at the Howard Univ. College of Medicine and a Resource Faculty at the Center for the Advanced Study of Hominid Paleobiology of George Washington Univ. (US). He is the author or co-author of numerous publications, and the co-editor of the books Catfishes and Gonorynchiformes and ostariophysan interrelationships - a comprehensive review. He is the sole author or first author of several monographs, including the three atlases of gorillas, chimpanzees and hylobatids and the books Morphological evolution, aptations, homoplasies, constraints and evolutionary trends - catfishes as a case study on general phylogeny and macroevolution, The origin of higher clades - osteology, myology, phylogeny and evolution of bony fishes and the rise of tetrapods, Muscles of vertebrates - comparative anatomy, evolution, homologies and development, and Comparative anatomy and phylogeny of primate muscles and human evolution.
 
Juan Pastor is Prof. at the Dep. of Anatomy of the Univ. of Valladolid (Spain) and is the director of the University's Anatomical Museum, which houses the largest comparative osteological collection in Spain. He published several papers on comparative anatomy and anthropology.
 
Adam Hartstone- Rose is Associate Prof. at the Dep. of Cell Anatomy and Anatomy of the Univ. of South Carolina. He published several papers on comparative anatomy and anthropology, and chapters in books and one encyclopedia.
 
Magdalena N. Muchlinski is Assistant Prof. at the Dep. of Anatomy and Neurobiology of the Univ. of Kentucky. She has published several papers on primate sensory ecology, early primate evolution, and general comparative primate anatomy.  She has also published several book chapters and one encyclopedia entry about primate comparative anatomy. Her current research focuses on comparative primate physiology and energetics. Although her specialization is strepsirrhine anatomy, she has spent almost two decades studying great ape anatomy.
