Through their efforts, the ranch begins to pay for itself, and Helga's bold new local fashion enterprise begins to flourish, endearing her to the community. When the haunting nightmares return and Sorrells relapses into alcohol addiction, Charlie and Helga support him. When harsh elements and evildoers threaten, they defend themselves and each other. Along the way Helga and Sorrells fall in love, but between them there is always the question of not if but when Jake Sorrells will one day throw his gear into the pickup and be gone.
