LAND WAR!

The humble little cabin in the great Gila Wilderness of New Mexico Territory is more than a home to Evan Shelby. It's his last chance for life. He was diagnosed with tuberculosis and his condition was considered hopeless until he moved out here. It's been six months now since he showed any symptoms, and he's come to love the land and people in this little ranching community. But he's not the only one who loves the land. A major Texas cow outfit just opened a land office, and they plan to start a huge cattle ranch. They're not offering much money for folks' land, but they have plenty of hardcases to help convince people to sell. His friends have asked Evan to help, but as the invaders clash with the locals and tensions keep mounting, Evan may have the toughest battle of his life in front of him.

About the Author:

Fred Grove (born Frederick Herridge, 1913-2008) was a Native American author and winner of five prestigious Spur Awards from the Western Writers of America for his western novels. He was born in Hominy, Oklahoma.

From Booklist:
This much-honored western author, the winner of five Spur awards, is the son of a ranching father and a mother who was part Osage and Sioux. Here he tells the story of Evan Shelby, West Point graduate, distinguished cavalry officer, and tuberculosis victim. Discharged from the army, Shelby settles in the New Mexico Territory where, with the help of a doctor who shares his malady, he is well on his way to being cured. Soon he finds himself in the middle of a conflict between local ranchers and a Texas cattle company with plans to move into the area, buy up the small ranches, and set up an enormous spread. The conflict is complicated by the fact that Shelby, on the side of the locals, finds himself falling in love the young woman who owns the Texas company. Mainstream western fare, sure to satisfy genre regulars. Budd Arthur
