The Civil War tore the nation apart, pitting brother against brother. Marking the sesquicentennial of this epic struggle for America's soul, For Us the Living brings the crisis unforgettably to life through stunning paintings by acclaimed Civil War artist Mort Künstler and stirring text by Pulitzer Prize-nominated author James I. Robertson Jr., interwoven with eyewitness accounts. About the Author:
Mort Künstler, America's premier historical artist, is renowned for his historically authentic and moving Civil War scenes. Künstler's work has been the subject of 18 books, selling more than 500,000 copies. He has exhibited in galleries and museums nationwide and received many awards. James I. Robertson is the director of the Virginia Center for Civil War Studies at Virginia Tech. He has written more than 15 books and has received every major award given in the field of Civil War history. His biography of Thomas “Stonewall” Jackson was nominated for the Pulitzer Prize. Harold Holzer is a leading authority on Abraham Lincoln. He has authored, co-authored, and edited 36 books, including The New York Times The Complete Civil War 1861-1865, Mine Eyes Have Seen the Glory: The Civil War in Art, and Lincoln at Cooper Union: The Speech That Made Abraham Lincoln President, which won a 2005 Lincoln Prize. He currently serves as Senior Vice President for External Affairs at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York.
From Booklist:
An anthology of Künstler’s oeuvre, this work collects a popular artist’s aesthetic style for Civil War buffs who will not only instantly recognize most subjects Künstler depicts but perhaps remember some paintings from their reproductions in one of Künstler’s prior albums (e.g., Images of the Civil War, 1992). Many are kinetic freeze-frames of epic incidents of battle––Künstler’s series on Pickett’s Charge is here––and of legendary commanders in councils of war. Most numerous are scenes of Confederate Robert E. Lee and his lieutenants. Unabashedly posing his figures in heroic or ennobling postures, Künstler paints as a sharp adherent to technical realism, an important attribute to an audience that is vigilant about the accuracy of uniforms and arms.It will be equally responsive to the moods for which Künstler reaches, uncomplicated evocations of duty and courage in soldiers on campaign and in combat or a more quiet romanticism in domestic scenes from the moonlight-and-magnolias genre. Containing more than 200 color images and commentary by an accomplished Civil War historian, this volume––a cinch to circulate––visually seizes attention. --Gilbert Taylor
