About the Author:
The National Capital Panthans, hosts for the 1998 Dum-Dum in Baltimore, MD, the 1999 ECOF Gathering in Gaithersburg, MD, the 2003 ECOF Gathering in Baltimore, MD, and the 2006 ECOF Gathering in Rockville, MD, is the local Washington - Annapolis - Baltimore area chapter of the Burroughs Bibliophiles, the worldwide organization of collectors of the works of Edgar Rice Burroughs. Meetings are held in a member's home, thereby giving members a chance to see each other's collections, sell each other their duplicates, and generally behave as if they were at a Dum-Dum or an ECOF gathering. Unlike many other groups, they have no officers, no official membership, and no dues. However, they do have an unofficial "Quaestor," John Tyner, to manage the funds sent in for our miscellaneous administrative needs. They have two monthly publications available to Panthan members: The Panthan Newsletter (which covers the activities at the most recent meeting and location and date for the upcoming month's meeting) is available to all who wish to. The Panthan Newsletter is the result of a cooperative editorial effort between J. G. Huckenpöhler and Bill Ross. Responsibility for mailing out the monthly Newsletter rotates among the members, and the meetings at members' homes are contributed by the host. Their other publication, the National Capital Panthan Journal which first appeared at the organizational meeting in September 1996; goes only to those attending the meeting and/or submitting contributions. Depending upon what members have to contribute in any given month, the Journal may contain as few as 20 pages or as many as 60. Contributions may include fanfic, notes downloaded from the Internet, artwork from professional artist members, movie reviews, or cover paintings from foreign language editions. Any member of the Burroughs Bibliophiles is welcome to join the group and subscribe to the newsletter and visitors are encouraged to attend the meetings.
