The story is about two yearling moose in British Columbia, separated from their mothers, who meet and begin a search to reunite with their families. While searching, they mingle with a herd of longhorn cattle destined to be gifts from Captain George Vancouver for King Kamehameha of Hawaii Island. The young moose pair is mistaken for a type of cow by Vancouver's inexperienced crew and swept up during the round up, sailing with the herd to the island. Upon landing in Hawaii, they escape during a storm to the high mountain forests on the massive volcano, Mauna Loa. They enjoy the cool climate on the mountain and the snow on the peak reminds them of their home in Canada. Over the years the moose remain free, share great adventures and raise their own family. They are seen on rare occasion by cowboys searching for cattle, but only briefly as the moose prefer to live in solitude. These sightings, rejected by most as fable, spawn the "Legend of the Hula Moose." Target age is 6-100 years young.

From the Author:
I am a first grade teacher who has read thousands of beautiful stories to the children in my classes. After many trips to Hawaii Island, I became inspired by the history, culture and "Aloha Spirit" to write Legend Of The HULA MOOSE.  I wish to thank my students at Guadalupe Elementary School (Union School District) in San Jose California, for being the first audience for this book. This story demonstrates that living creatures can adjust to unfamiliar surroundings, make new friends, and overcome all obstacles to thrive.  The moose are helped in their adaptation to island life by the other animals, illustrating that everybody including moose, needs love and guidance to achieve success!  ALOHA! --Christine Sprowl Tetak
From the Inside Flap:
Soon after the paniolo (Hawaiian Cowboys) arrived back at the ranch, they told the others at dinner about seeing moose near the waterfall pond on the volcanic mountain of Mauna Loa.The cowboys laughed it off, thinking the story a joke or just an imaginary tale.  Throughout the years there were more sightings, rejected by most as fable.  These stories spawned the Legend Of The HULAMOOSE.  However, anyone with good sense knew that ther were no moose in Hawai'i! --Christine Sprowl Tetak
