After a course of study in the Ecole Normale Sup rieure, he spent two years in the universities of Germany, making a study of their courses in history. In 1879 he was elected Professor of History in the University of Dijon. He was called to a professorship in the Sorbonne in 1883, and in 1890 was made Ma tre des Conf rences at the Sorbonne, and is now Ma tre des Conf rences in the Facult des Lettres of Paris. Professor Seignobos occupies a place of prominence among modern French historians and is also a leader in the cause of secondary education. In addition to the Histoire de la Civilisation he is the author of numerous historical works.
