Oberlin College Students Tell It Like It Is

Are you an Obie prospie? Well there's no reason you should feel like an outsider when you first step foot on campus! Buy the College Prowler guidebook and get the inside scoop on everything Oberlin students already know from experience . . .

Without a doubt, one of the best things about classes at Oberlin is their size-the small-class environment leads to stimulating discussions and a more intimate rapport between students and professors. The discussion-intensive nature of most classes can be intimidating to students who are not already accustomed to speaking up in front of their peers, but most students are glad not to spend all their time in big lecture halls.

But classes aren't the only thing to consider when choosing a college.

What about the town you will live in for the next four years?
"Oberlin's a really small town and has only one bar. This means that you can't really avoid anyone, so you better not burn your bridges. But it's actually a pretty nice small town, and it's really worthwhile to seek activities that involve town residents (i.e. tutoring kids, working at town businesses, the Bike Co-op, community projects-check out the big parade that happens every year)."

Or the inside scoop on where you should live?
"Hands down, the ugliest dorm on campus is Dascomb Hall; however, Dascomb is conveniently located in the center of campus and is in the same building as one of the two major dining halls. As for attractive architecture, Asia House and Talcott are by far the best bet."

"Nice dorms-Talcott, Third World, and French House. Dorms to avoid-Dascomb, Harkness (if you're not a hippie)."

Or the best way to meet people on campus?
"The best thing to hit Oberlin, at least insofar as relationships are concerned, is the online student dating service-although it claims to be more platonic than that-called Obiematch. Through it, students can finally figure out who that cute person in their math class is, what their major is, and where they're from."

Find out if Oberlin truly has something for you, straight from the students' mouths.

Visiting campus isn't enough.

About the Author:
Writing this guide about Oberlin taught me more than I ever knew about my own school. I worked on it as I traveled in the Eastern United States and Canada, stopping to write in places like Boston, Syracuse, Montreal, North Hatley, and Pictou Island, Nova Scotia. In a few months I will be a senior at Oberlin College, completing my majors in East Asian studies (Japanese) and English, with a minor in anthropology. I grew up in Quebec, and lived in Japan for a year before starting college, so Ohio was totally new ground for me. Coming to college here has, for the most part, been an enriching and exhilarating experience. I hope the information in this guide has been useful to you in the process of making a decision about where to go to college.

Without further ado, I d like to thank all the people who took the time to share their insight and witty commentaries about Oberlin with me: Scott, Yuuki, Bess, Logan, Rachel, Kit, Emily, Oona, Tom, Natty, Becky, David, Meaghan, Mami, and Ellen. Thank you to Dad, Mom, Pierre, Scott, Anne, Craig, Chris, and Gretchen for letting me spend so much time on your computers! Finally, thank you to the Office of Admissions at Oberlin College, the Office of Health Services, ResLife, the CIT, Safety & Security, and the Office of Career Services where I found out about College Prowler in the first place and to everyone at College Prowler for your help and support.
