Kindergarten-Grade 4—This book's title and cover are enticing, but the poems will challenge independent readers. They have varied meters, words that are difficult to pronounce ("pterodactyl," "chicktyls," "chanticleers"), and vocabulary that is too ambitious for the intended audience. However, the meanings of words such as "hominids," "drub," "schist," and "mawful," become clear in context when they are read aloud and youngsters will like the slightly irreverent humor. The third poem, "Coprolite," about a paleontologist who examines fossilized fecal matter, includes some questionable lines like, "That LuAnn always was cuckoo/Her parents both were nut jobs too," but ends with the clever axiom, "You are not only what you eat,/You are also what you excrete." Cartoon illustrations in black Prismacolor pencils and digitally colored play off one another with dark and bright hues. The endpapers are delightful, featuring a big bone, cavemen, insects, and little creatures popping out of the ground.
