About the Author:

Travis Nichols is the author and illustrator of several books for kids and post-kids, including The Monster Doodle Book, Punk Rock Etiquette and Matthew Meets the Man. He previously drew comics for the late, great Nickelodeon Magazine. His deepest, most secret wish is to wake up as a gnome and spend his days building wooden locks, eating tiny biscuits and hanging out with birds. He can be found eating watermelon over the sink or online.

Can an Ugly Doll really save the day? Why not? Kids will enjoy the many kinds of heroes portrayed in the book, from retired superheroes to hero wannabes to mythological heroes. The collection contains illustrations from multiple artists. Some of the styles are strikingly different, but they work within the theme and don't distract from the humor and appeal of these vignettes and characters. Every page is filled with vibrant colors that will draw children's attention into every detail. Near the conclusion, there's a menu that offers readers multiple ways to create their own Uglyverse comic with the roll of the die and their imagination. Even though this is a feature that seems better placed as back matter, it will be well-received by the intended audience and educators.
