From Booklist:
This work provides a snapshot of environmental initiatives and resource utilization. Along with essays specific to each state or province, there are two overview essays: one explores environmental issues in the U.S., and the other in Canada. In addition, this volume contains color photographs, a glossary of terms, a chronology of salient events and regulations, a list of major environmental organizations, a general bibliography, and an index. Individual state (and province) entries explore current environmental issues and give some idea on future direction. Each entry starts with an introduction outlining the geographical climate and that region’s outlook on its environmental issues, followed by four main sections: the region’s natural resources, energy, green initiatives, and one key region-specific environmental issue (examples include the Ohio Clean Energy Fund, Ontario’s wind farms, and Tennessee Valley’s coal-ash spill). A bibliography, heavy on websites, rounds out each entry. The natural-resources section has a fairly large scope, covering environmental challenges, agriculture, water, nature preserves, and wildlife. Although the structure of these chapters is uniform, the content and length of each subsection varies depending on that issue’s impact on the region. Each region is covered in roughly 10 pages providing equal regional coverage but at the expense of underestimating region size or level of environmental impact (for example, just 20 percent of the work covers Canadian issues). A minor complaint: factors that cause genetic mutations are discussed, but the issue is not systematically covered. Despite these two flaws, this work is an excellent starting point for those wanting to study region-specific environmental issues and is suitable for upper high-school students and academic libraries. --Muhammed Hassanali
