Synopsis

Church Mouse is a book about the people I serviced in a local mental hospital. All of those I met over the years were my teachers. I want to thank the countless persons who have given me these stories. Doctors, nurses, plumbers, groundkeepers, and the family called volunteers are very special. Without people like Bob Buxbaum, Scott Smith, M.D., Howard Linton, Joseph Coche, M.D., Eugine Eberline, M.D., Steven Schnee, Ph.D., Christi Coleen Johnson (my daughter), my mentor, Cyra Dimitry, Eleanor, Rubin, Carol Lee, Kevin Smith and David Moore, there would be no book. A very special person who helped me sing new songs to a happy beat was Therese Luderus. I thank her for her ministry. Then, without a doubt I want to thank Shirley, my wife, for her patience and participation in this life story. At times the writing was easy because the stories are real. There are more but these are the ones that presented themselves first. The final phase needed help. Mary Moreno stepped in and gave the final loving touch through her edits and word craft. Chris continued to encourage the book as did the Woodlawn Writer's Group. All are deeply appreciated and I hope you will enjoy Church Mouse.

About the Author:

Dr. Robert F. Cullum is the Retired Coordinator of Chaplain Services for the Texas Department of Mental Health and Retardation. He is presently the Interim Pastor of Harlandale Baptist Church in San Antonio, Texas. He has written several articles about mental health, counseling, religious practices of the Medicine Man and Curanderos. He has often lectured at National Conventions and for Local Civic Groups. He contributed an article on personality for a layman's course in Hands on Ministry.Dr. Cullum was Resident Chaplain for the Masonic Home and School in Ft. Worth, Texas. He was an Intern Chaplain at the Baptist Memorial Hospital and spent a thirty-year career as Chaplain Supervisor at the San Antonio State Hospital.It was his pleasure to have served as President of such Local Civic Groups as the San Antonio Mental Health Association, the President's Club and Crosspoint, Inc., in each he served a term as President. He has held other elected offices and enjoyed a year as President for the Harlandale Lions Club. Over the years, he has done missionary work in Acuna, Mexico, has been called to serve several churches i.e., Bellaire Baptist, Hot Wells Baptist, and Harlandale Baptist Church. On the National Level, he served a two-year term as President of the Association of Mental Health Clergy. He has had the pleasure of being a Professionally Certified Chaplain and endorsed by the Southern Baptist Home Mission Board.His life work has been dedicated to the mentally ill and retarded. To highlight this work, he received the Anton Boisen Award in March of 2000. He holds a Doctorate of Theology from Luther Rice Theological Seminary, two master's (1) Master of Divinity and (2) Master of Religious Education from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. He completed his Clinical Education at Baptist Memorial Hospital in San Antonio, Texas.Dr. Cullum is married to Shirley R. Harvengt Cullum. They had three daughters and have six grandchildren.
