The dialogue, sometimes lacking the concise perfection that is Parker's hallmark, is rescued by Mantegna's portrayals of the characters, Spenser himself, Susan (elegantly cultured but remarkably tolerant of Spenser's life-and-death world), and Hawk (ever stalwart and loyal).
