Oxbow says: This important Late Neolithic tell site on the Great Hungarian Plain was first investigated by Ida Bognar-Kutzian in 1957 and further investigations were conducted after her death by Eszter Banffy, in 1989. This volume is the only major publication on the results of these excavations and surveys available and provides a tantalising glimpse into what the final site report will include. With its important ritual and burial assemblages, as well as domestic evidence, the site presents a number of intriguing paradoxes. This volume presents the finds by level and then thematically, including radiocarbon dates, environmental data, houses, burials, pottery, lithics, copper finds, shell and animal bones.

About the Author:
Eszter Bánffy is a Hungarian archaeologist, specialised in European prehistory, in particular of Central and South-east Europe, authoring several books and a wide range of papers. She has worked for the Archaeological Institute of Hungarian Academy of Sciences; as a professor of prehistoric archaeology and of geoarchaeology (Szeged University), and has been conducting Hungarian and international projects. Since 2013, she has been director of the Romano-Germanic Commission of the German Archaeological Institute in Frankfurt am Main. She is a Fellow of the British Academy.

Although the trial was limited to a small trench, the several meters thick deposits yielded exciting finds and several richly furnished burials. The brief preliminary report and the various references to the excavation made it quite obvious that the tell was one of the key sites of the Hungarian Neolithic and thus the full publication of the tell and its finds was, quite understandably, eagerly awaited by prehistorians. The site’s investigation was resumed in 1989 as part of the excavations preceding the construction of the M3 motorway. The excavator directed the large-scale excavation of the tell and its enclosure of five ditches, and of the extensive horizontal settlement beside it. This excavation was preceded by various geophysical surveys and palaeoenvironmental sampling in order to reconstruct the settlement’s one-time environment and to determine the exact date of its occupation. However, until the results of the new excavation are published in detail, this monograph will be the single available study on the Polgár-Csőszhalom site, the eponymous site of a Late Neolithic culture.
