Introduction
On April 7, 2007, Poetry Daily (www.poems.com) marks its tenth anniversary online! In celebration, we are delighted to present Poetry Daily Essentials 2007, a selection of poems featured on our web site since we assembled our first anthology, published by Sourcebooks in 2003.
Every day of every year, Poetry Daily presents a new poem (and sometimes two or three...) from the best new books and journals in English, from publishers large and small. For thousands of readers around the world who have made Poetry Daily their personal home page, our daily poem is literally the first thing they read each day. If you are one of these readers, Poetry Daily Essentials 2007 is a compact reminder of past pleasures you can carry with you through your offline day. If you've not yet visited us online, this selection will give you a taste of the wide range and sources of great poems to be found on Poetry Daily from day to day, week to week, year to year (and decade to decade!).
We've done our best to represent the variety and depth of the poetry that appears on Poetry Daily, so enjoy Poetry Daily Essentials 2007 and then drop in online! You will be joining readers from all walks of life – poets and teachers and students, to be sure – but also the many quiet thousands who carry on their devotion to contemporary poetry in offices and on work sites, in community centers and libraries, in retirement homes and military bases – and, no kidding, "all the ships at sea": one of our earliest correspondents wrote to us from a research ship in Antarctica!
As you will know, Poetry Daily did not create the audience for authentic poetry that has always existed in every era. But our constant pleasure, all these years, has been to help that audience to grow and to enjoy a broader and richer experience of contemporary poetry by providing access to exciting new poetry from even the most obscure journal and chapbook publisher – to do all we can to serve as matchmaker between poet and reader. Everything we do, from our daily online selections and the many other special editorial features and news links found on our site, to this new anthology, is done to help readers follow the poems that inspire them to the books and journals where a still richer experience of their favorite poets' work will be found.
So, once again, welcome to Poetry Daily offline, and when you've had a chance to enjoy this special collection, look for more poetry and special features at www.poems.com. We'll be there for you every day!
