One of the most endearingly goofy superhero concepts of the 1960s was the Metal Men, a team of robots whose names, powers, and personalities derived from various metals. Gold was noble and ductile; Iron, strong and resolute. Tin was weak and insecure; Mercury, mercurial and liquid. Their foes, such as a giant, flying, radioactive stingray and Chemo, a transparent plastic being filled with deadly chemicals, were equally absurd. The stories even contained an element of soap opera, for gorgeous fembot Platinum was smitten with the group's creator, scientist Will Magnus. Although the stories by Robert Kanigher, best-known for the hundreds of DC war-comics scripts, were formulaic even by the standards of the day--the robots would regularly be destroyed, one-by-one, while battling each menace and as regularly reconstructed by Doc Magnus for the next showdown--and Ross Andru and Mike Esposito's art was just serviceable, though distinctive, The Metal Men is fondly remembered by fans of a certain age, who will constitute an enthusiastic audience for this roundup of the first nine issues.
