Maria del Fiore esisteva in quel punto la chiesa primaziale della città di Firenze col titolo di Santa Reparata; questa chiesa edificata nell' anno 407 portò il titolo di Pieve fino al 1128, nel quale anno fu rogato un contratto che dava a Santa Reparata il titolo di Cattedrale. Mantenne questo titolo fino al 1412 nel quale anno, e il di 22 Aprile, usciva un editto, che ordinava che d'allora in poi la Cattedrale di Firenze fosse chiamata Santa Maria del Fiore.
