We celebrate the birthday of the Father of his Country. If we are true to our self-imposed task of portraying that greatest of Americans, as he really was, there are features which we may not leave out. We shall not forget that his letters, his public addresses, and even his military orders, frankly confessed his utter depend ence for success upon the blessing of Almighty God. We shall not ignore the fact that he acknowledged the power of prayer, and asked the intercessions of his compatriots. We shall not shut our eyes to the convictions which made this statesman, warrior, and ruler, a communicant and vestryman of an Episcopal Church yet catholic-spirited enough to ask for the Supper of the Lord at the hands of a Presbyterian clergyman.
