But not only the oriental student will appreciate the work of Mr. Beech; I am confident this fruit of his three years' residence in North Borneo will also be useful to those who may be in need of a practical guide to the Tidong language. Being a colonial myself and having resided in Western Borneo and Java as a magistrate and a controller in the Dutch Colonial Civil Service, I know how helpful such a guide may prove to be in those far-off and scarcely known regions.
A short Appendix deals with the phonetic system and some other points of the grammar which needed a more extensive linguistic treating for oriental students. As the Malay language may be supposed to be the best known among the sisters of Tidong, the grammar of the former has been constantly laid together with that of the latter for the sake of comparison.
