A few years ago an effort was made to aid newly-arrived missionaries in their early studies. By the publication of. A small Vocabulary containing all the characters found in the Gospel of St. John. It was arranged under the Radicals and contained such expressions as would be useful in mission work. Since then many have expressed a desire for something similar on a larger scale - for a portable volume containing nough information to enable anyone to read the New Testament. The present work (the first New Testament Vocabulary published in the Mandarin Dialect) has been prepared to meet this desire, and to seek by the analysis of characters to render intelligible what seems a maze of mystery to a new-comer. Perhaps a few words of explanation of the Analytical Method may not be out of place here.
