In the realm of song, in particular, there is a superabundance of good things which is appal ling; and, as usual, the good is the enemy of the best. The time has come when we can preserve only the very best. The merely good is doomed to disappear, together with the mediocre.
No singer has either time or inclination to mas ter all the songs of even the greatest of compos ers. Schubert alone produced five hundred and thirty-eight Lieder; and while he was the most recklessly prodigal of them all, there is hardly one composer who can be acquitted of the charge of having written so many songs that the best of them are in danger of being lost in the multitude.
