P. 66, Lee gives several details omitted by Paris in the story of the Pope Leo's eyes being replaced by Charlemagne. According to Lee, it was Ch arle magne's cook who found the eyes, not Charlemagne; the fish is called luz (luce, pike), and the delightful folk-lore touch is added, of the right and left eye being transposed. It might be suggested from this that Paris had condensed the narrative here and elsewhere. But as in all other places the evidence seems conclusive in favour of Lee being a mere copyist's expansion, I think it most probable that the Lee copyist knew the legend already, and filled up the details from his own know ledge. The whole passage where this legend occurs is an interpolation, not found in any Iatin original.
