Pendant l'hiver 1900 - 1901, faisant un premier s€joui' en Égypte, je pus consacrer quelques heures à une visite rapide des monuments découverts par M. Loret. Celui-ci venait de quitter la direction du Service des Antiquités, sans avoir pu terminer le travail de mise en état des lieux pour assurer la con servation des ruines exhumées. M. Maspero, revenu en Egypte, ne put, devant l'amas énorme des déblais et pour d'autres raisons techniques, songer à présenter aux visiteurs tout ce quartier de nécropole. Il dut se borner à prendre les mesures nécessaires pour rendre accessibles trois monuments importants, s'ouvrant tous dans une même rue.
Pendant les dix jours que nous y avons passés, à la fin de mars 1907, aucun visiteur n'a pénétré dans les tombeaux.
