Wenn bei der Ueberwindung der ersten Schwierigkeit neben dem Philosophen der Sprachkflnstler bei der zweiten neben dem Philosophen der Dichter zu thun fand, so war es schliesslich eine vorzugsweise dichterische Aufgabe, den gegebenen Stoff, ohne irgend Wesentliches davon aufzuopfern, so im Geiste umzubilden, dass er zum poetischen Vorwurf werde und dass nicht versificirte Prosa, sondern ein Gedicht zu Stande komme. Der grösste Bemmderer Lucrezischer Poesie wird nicht behaupten wollen, dass ihm das überall in gleicher Weise gelungen sei. Es giebt der Abschnitte genug, wo die Rede nur stockend und widerwillig fliesst, wo dem rein wissenschaftlichen Inhalt das poetische Gewand aufgezwängt erscheint. Aber für mein Gefühl wenigstens überwiegen die Stellen, wo der Dichter sein Ziel erreicht hat oder ihm nahe gekommen ist, wo der Leser fühlt, dass nicht bloss Gelerntes und Gedachtes, son dern Angeschautes, Empfundenes, Erlebtes wiedergegeben wird, wo die Form mit N othwendigkeit aus der poetischen Conception er.
