Both these Societies were the outcome of the reaction from the excesses of the reign of Charles II., and their successes in the recovery of public morality led finally to the establishment of a Society which, while working on the lines of both, should take a wider field, and endeavour, by the promotion of Christian knowledge everywhere, to dissipate the gross ignorance of Chris tian principles which had resulted, according to the opinion of the founders, in the then prevailing vice and immorality. Founded in the year 1698, the Society for Promoting Christian Knowledge soon associated with it in its work numbers of zealous men in all parts of the country. The many-sided character of that work, and the obstacles which. Had to be overcome in carrying it out, are revealed to a large extent in the Society's Minutes, and the Abstracts of Letters which are here published.
The time covered by the Minutes now printed extends from the first meeting of the Society on Wednesday, March 8, 1698 - 99, till Thursday, June 1, 1704, and the Abstract of Letters from Nov. 22, 1699, till Nov., 1701.
Although the period dealt with is a short one, there is sufficient material in this volume to give us a fair idea of the state of the Church of England at the time, and not a little information upon the condition of society generally.
