Our first thought on laying down the life of M. Gonthier, might be - Ah! here, indeed, is an instance of the melancholy fact, that "man is born to sorrow as the sparks fly upward:" but we must go into the sanctuary of God, and lift up our hands towards his holy oracle, if we would understand the life of man on earth, and the dealings of the Creator with him. Then every thing wears at once a new aspect. That which seemed a bounded life, with no horizon beyond the mound of the grave, becomes at once the pilgrimage of an immortal being whose rest is not here, but who is going onward to the Land of Promise.
