N the following pages, which, when I began to write, were intended only for my family and personal friends, I have spoken of men and things as they came to mind, without regard to order or oonsecutiveness. Many of the men were known only in limited circles, but they were well known there, and the impressions which they made upon me have not been effaced nor weakened by intervening years. Of some prominent persons I have spoken with great freedom, but neither as eulogist nor critic. T heir historic deeds form impor tant chapters in the national history, and What I have said about them, if it is not now, will, I think, ere long, be in accord With the sentiment of a large majority of their countrymen.
