The questions discussed in this book are so important, and the value of the judgments expressed in it is so dependent upon the character of the writer's antecedent experiences, that it may be well to state succinctly the measure and nature of my career as a teacher, and as an advocate of certain teaching methods.
Beginning as a monitor, in 1871, in the excellent National (that is, Church of England) School at the village of Chenies, Buckinghamshire, I taught in elementary schools without a break till I resigned from the service of the London School Board in 1896. From Chenies I proceeded to another Buckinghamshire village, Great Missenden, where I worked as head-teacher of the Church School for two years. This rural scenery was exchanged for the more difficult environment of London, where I taught classes of somewhat poor boys for eight years in Bethnal Green, and still poorer boys in Limehouse for another eight years. In a variety of Sunday schools I taught on a simple ethical basis from 1893 to 1910.
