As with slavery, that other fundamental institution of the Roman World, materials on family and household are maddeningly diffuse, fragmented, and therefore rather difficult to find and use. That a good selection of the primary source materials on Roman households has been assembled, and that new translations have been provided for these sources, should be gratefully accepted as a considerable boon to teachers and students and alike.
