Except for Chapters 27 and 28, which have been considerably revised, this edition is essentially a reprint of the 1969 version. ... As of the time this manuscript goes to press, the final chapter on the Army's role in Vietnam remains unwritten. It is of course especially difficult to write the history of a war not yet over, but Chapter 28, covering the action through the end of 1967, does reflect the research and on-the-spot observation of several able historians whose personal and professional views of the war are by no means uniform.
