Wombland - Softcover
Wombland follows the fortunes of a pair of foetal twins. Their story is told in verse – an unusual and intriguing form - while the overall structure is divided into three trimesters (the normal gestation period). The individual poems are arranged in easy-to-read couplets. The story is told entirely from the point of view of Roy and Pearl, fraternal twins, as they struggle to survive. They develop unequally: Pearl is the bigger, cleverer one; Roy is the runt but is physically more agile. He pokes fun at Pearl’s pretentiousness while secretly admiring it. Meanwhile Pearl worries about Roy: will he grow, thrive In the end will they both manage to get born (and what then) The twins are in a sealed world at the mercy of outside forces, their fate uncertain, and so they turn to each other for comfort. You could call it a kind of love story.
