Written for children, but with parents very much in mind, this book tells the Apollo 11 story through the medium of artist Adrian Buckley's atmospheric imagery. From President Kennedy's call to put a man on the moon to the celebratory ticker tape parade in Manhattan, this is a story of three extraordinary men and their incredible achievement: Mission Commander Neil Armstrong, Lunar Module Pilot Edwin Buzz Aldrin and Command Module Pilot Michael Collins. On 21 July 1969, when Neil Armstrong opened the hatch in the Lunar Module and descended the ladder to set foot on the surface of the Moon, he became in an instant the greatest traveler in human history. Full of period detail and fascinating insights, this is a book to be explored and enjoyed.

About the Author:
Adrian Buckley is a renowned graphic artist, whose previous book for children, An Igloo on the Moon: Exploring Architecture, won wide critical acclaim.David Jenkins is an author who ranges across disciplines. This is his second book for children. His first, An Igloo on the Moon: Exploring Architecture, won the DAM Architectural Book Award 2015.
From School Library Journal:
Gr 2–4—Jenkins and Buckley bring their expertise in art and architecture to this retelling of the Apollo 11 mission. This famous mission brought Neil Armstrong, Edwin "Buzz" Aldrin, and Michael Collins to the moon in July 1969. The book begins with President John F. Kennedy's challenge in 1961 to land on the moon before 1970, and concludes with the astronauts' successful return and celebration. Jenkins, an architect, provides readers with details of the engineering involved in creating the vessel: the Saturn V rocket system, the Apollo spacecraft, the command and service modules, and the lunar module Eagle. Readers will gain an appreciation for how delicate this mission was. The majority of the images are altered photographs, with many of the people featured filtered in retro colors. This artistic effect successfully mixes the realism of photography with a 20th-century newspaper vibe. Images of the spacecraft, the moon landing, and the astronauts are presented throughout. VERDICT This fast, exciting read is sure to resonate with budding explorers and is an artful addition to robust science collections.—Jeffrey Meyer, Mount Pleasant Public Library, IA
